La Sierra High School Recycles!

Ms. Wilbur's AP Environmental Science students are reducing campus waste one water bottle at a time...

In 2022, La Sierra High School students took it upon themselves to make a difference both on their campus and in the environment. They formed The Recycling Club and launched a campus-wide bottles and cans recycling initiative. The club distributes deskside containers to classrooms and conducts weekly pick-ups and inspections to ensure the recycling process is contamination-free.

The impact of the recycling program on campus has been remarkable. The campus community worked together to divert hundreds of bottles and cans from ending up in landfills. The funds raised have been thoughtfully used to purchase t-shirts for the recycling club, symbolizing their shared commitment to achieving zero waste.

It is inspiring to see a community work together to achieve a common goal and create positive change. We can't wait to see what's next in store for these Eagles!

"Recycling is important because it keeps our campus clean, and it helps the environment. " - Andrew NguyenStudent

Turning Trash into Treasure

La Sierra students found a clever way to raise funds for their club by utilizing the state's CRV program. Under the California Redemption/Refund Value (CRV) Program, consumers pay a refund value when purchasing beverages from retailers.

The rates are as follows:

  • $0.05 for most aluminum, glass, plastic, and bi-metal containers under 24oz;
  • $0.10 for containers 24oz or greater

By returning empty beverage containers to recycling centers, consumers can receive these refunds.

For more information on the CRV Program, please visit CalRecycle's website.

You CAN do it too!

Establishing a waste reduction program on your school campus offers a range of environmental, economic, and social benefits.

  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions

  • Minimizing reliance on raw materials

  • Conserving energy

  • Protecting ecosystems and wildlife
