Explosive Waste, Hazardous Device
Explosive waste includes any device or material which either is chemically or otherwise energetically unstable, which can produce a sudden expansion of the material and is accompanied by the production of heat or a large change in pressure. Explosive waste includes, but is not limited to, fire works, commercial explosives, military explosives, home made explosive devices, small and large ammunition and pressurized gas vessels, and cylinders.
Explosive waste and hazardous devices are not accepted at any Riverside County landfill or waste facility. Placing explosive material or hazardous devices in the solid waste stream places solid waste workers and the public at serious risk of injury and death. Individuals who place this waste in the solid waste stream are subject to felony criminal prosecution.
Individuals with waste explosives should contact their local law enforcement Department for questions regarding explosive waste and/or possible hazardous devices. In any emergency situation involving explosive waste or hazardous devices, individuals should call 911 for immediate response.
When illegally disposed of explosive waste or possible hazardous devices are encountered at the landfill, Riverside County landfill employees immediately initiate a 911 response from the appropriate responding agencies for investigation and mitigation of the hazard.
